In our modern lives, we spend an increasing amount of time indoors, which means we miss out on supplements essential vitamin D and the natural benefits of grounding, also known as earthing. The earth’s surface is rich in energy and electrons that our bodies can utilize to balance our electrical frequency. By staying inside, we forgo these well-researched and FREE health benefits of earthing. To reap the full benefits of grounding, it’s important to remove your socks and shoes and make direct contact with the earth. Traditional flooring and typical shoes prevent the transfer of these beneficial electrons. Grounding has shown massive health benefits, and Doc’s family along with The Wellness Way team regularly practice it.
1- More Antioxidant Power
Grounding the body may provide it with a supply of free electrons from the Earth’s surface. These electrons act as antioxidants, neutralizing free radicals that can cause oxidative stress and damage to the body. Grounding can diminish cell damage that occurs through natural aging or exposure to toxins. A fantastic benefit of earthing is that it is the largest source of free antioxidants. [1]
2- Reduced Pain and Inflammation
Antioxidants and earthing can help reduce inflammation and pain! Studies show that people who ground report less pain than those who don’t. They even saw a reduction of white blood cells, which is a good sign that inflammation had gone down. It has even been documented through infrared imaging that earthing is anti-inflammatory. [1][2][3] Inflammation is the leading cause of pain. If we can reduce chronic inflammation, then we can reduce chronic pain.
3 – Better Sleep
Grounding helps normalize your circadian rhythm; it improves cortisol levels and helps your body adapt so you can sleep better. One study looked at participants who were grounded as they slept. It also measured their 24-hour cortisol profiles before and after grounding. The cortisol profiles went from scattered to steady after grounding. [4] If you start grounding, you may notice significant improvements in your sleep patterns.
4 – Reduced Feelings of Stress
Earthing reduces stress by balancing the autonomic nervous system, lowering cortisol and other stress hormones. Many people report immediate stress relief and a greater sense of well-being upon grounding. Grounding has been shown to take your body out of the fight-or-flight mode that so many of us are in due to modern-day life. [5] Cortisol is an essential hormone in your sleep cycle, but it’s also a primary stress hormone. Keeping cortisol levels where they should be can help your body’s response to stress. It also helps keep your other hormones from being depleted, which can happen if your cortisol levels are off.
5 – Improved Cardiovascular Health
Earthing enhances blood flow and circulation, reducing inflammation and blood viscosity. Improved circulation ensures that oxygen and nutrients are efficiently delivered to tissues and organs, including the heart, which is essential for maintaining cardiovascular health. Grounding improves heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of the variation in time between heartbeats and is an indicator or autonomic nervous system function. Higher HRV is associated with better heart health and resilience to stress. Earthing has been shown to reduce the clumping of red blood cells, lowering blood pressure, and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
6 – Positive Effects on The Immune System
Earthing may help modulate the immune response, ensuring that it’s neither too weak nor too strong. An overactive immune response can lead to autoimmune diseases, while an underactive one can result in increased susceptibility to infections. Some studies suggest that grounding may enhance the activity of white blood cells, which play a critical role in the immune response. This increased activity can help the body more effectively fight off infections and diseases. By balancing the immune response, earthing supports overall immune health.
7 – Sped Up Wound Healing
Earthing, or grounding, is thought to speed up wound healing through several mechanisms. Grounding may enhance the body’s ability to repair and regenerate tissues. The reduction in oxidative stress and inflammation, combined with improved circulation, creates an optimal environment for tissue repair and cell regeneration, which are essential for wound healing.
Will You Reap the Benefits of Earthing?
Just 30-40 minutes of grounding can significantly impact stress, pain, and inflammation. [1] We recommend grounding for as long as possible, but you will get massive benefits even if you just ground for a few minutes. Do whatever you can to get the FREE benefits of earthing.
Early morning is best for grounding because the highest number of electrons are available when the sun starts beating on the ground. Yes, it may be easier said than done for some of us! If you are in Texas or Florida, it’s a lot easier to ground year-round. If you are in a colder climate or live in a high rise in the city, you can still get the benefits of grounding.
A couple of options are using a grounding mat, grounding patches, or grounding pillowcase to ensure you get grounded each day, even when you’re not walking barefoot outside. You just plug these grounding systems into an electrical outlet and it’s as though you’re sitting or lying on the ground outside.
